  "notes": "This is the 9th quarterly HIV Program report after

implementation of the 2011 Integrated Clinical\r\nHIV Guidelines in 
            
27
July 2011. A summary of the key achievements between July and 
            
28
September\r\n2013 is provided below:\r\n\r\n* Scale-up of integrated 
            
29
HIV services had reached the following number of sites:\r\n\r\n     * 
            
30
__825__ static (607 within and 218 outside of health facilities) and 
            
31
534 outreach HTC sites\r\n\r\n     * __675__ (static) ART 
            
32
sites\r\n\r\n     * __590__ PMTCT sites (Option B+)\r\n\r\n     * 
            
33
__628__ Pre-ART sites\r\n\r\n     * __605__ sites with HIV-exposed 
            
34
child follow-up\r\n\r\n* __405,278__ persons were tested and 
            
35
counselled for HIV and __36,807 (9%)__ were HIV positive;\r\n__145,572 
            
36
(36%)__ people tested for the first time.\r\n\r\n* __12,646 (95%)__ of 
            
37
__13,299__ blood units collected were screened for HIV, hepatitis B 
            
38
and syphilis.\r\n\r\n* __128,022 (83%)__ of __153,561__ women at ANC 
            
39
had their HIV status ascertained; 9,988 (8%) of\r\nthese were HIV 
            
40
positive. __122,392 (93%)__ of __132,279__ women at maternity had 
            
41
their HIV status\r\nascertained; __9,337 (8%)__ of these were HIV 
            
42
positive.\r\n\r\n* __25,551__ patients started ART during this 
            
43
quarter; this is similar to the previous quarter\r\n(26,802).\r\n\r\n* 
            
44
__459,261__ patients were alive and on ART by end of September 2013. 
            
45
This is equivalent to\r\n74% coverage of the estimated __602,000__ 
            
46
population in need of ART (all ages).1 Estimated ART\r\ncoverage among 
            
47
children (<15 years) and adults was 47% and 81%, 
            
48
respectively.\r\n\r\n* __78%__ of adults and __80%__ of children were 
            
49
retained alive on ART at 12 months after initiation.\r\n\r\n* 
            
50
__309,127 (73%)__ of __424,961__ on first line adult ART were on 
            
51
regimen 5A (TDF/3TC/EFV).\r\n\r\nThe proportion of ART patients with 
            
52
documented side effects declined from 7% to 2%\r\ncompared with the 
            
53
previous quarter.\r\n\r\nA total of __11,788__ HIV positive pregnant 
            
54
women were on ART: __5,041 (43%)__ of these were\r\nalready on ART 
            
55
when getting pregnant and 6,747 (57%) started ART 
            
56
during\r\npregnancy/delivery. This is equivalent to 75% ART coverage 
            
57
among the estimated 15,750\r\nHIV infected pregnant women in Malawi 
            
58
this quarter. __6,429 (95%)__ of pregnant women\r\nstarted ART due to 
            
59
Option B+ (in WHO clinical stage 1 or 2) and 318 (5%) due to a low 
            
60
CD4\r\ncount and/or WHO clinical stage 3 or 4.\r\n\r\n* An additional 
            
61
__1,831__ breastfeeding women started ART due to Option B+ (in WHO 
            
62
stage 1/2)\r\n\r\n* __6,057 (79%)__ of __7,677__ women started under 
            
63
Option B+ were retained at 6 months after ART\r\ninitiation; __6,630 
            
64
(72%)__ of __9,205__ were retained at 12 months after ART

initiation.\r\n\r\n* __8,564 (7%)__ of infants discharged alive from 
            
66
maternity were known to be HIV exposed, 7,941\r\n(93%) of these

received ARV prophylaxis (nevirapine). __5,734 (67%)__ were enrolled

in exposed\r\nchild follow-up before age 2 months.\r\n\r\n* A total of

__10,258__ HIV exposed children and __8,884__ pre-ART patients were

enrolled for followup\r\nin HIV Care Clinics (HCC) during this 
            
71
quarter.\r\n\r\n* __162__ medical staff were newly trained and 
            
72
certified in PMTCT/ART this quarter. This brings\r\nthe total number 
            
73
trained in the 2011 guidelines to __5,985__.\r\n\r\n* __1,243__ HTC

providers were re-trained using the HTC Skills Intensive Training 
            
75
curriculum,\r\nbringing the total number re-trained to

__3,776__.\r\n\r\n* A total of __921__ staff at __235__ sites in 19

districts received clinical mentoring during. 104 staff\r\ngraduated,
