alive and on ART in Malawi, equivalent to __60%__ coverage of the

estimated population in need of ART. There were __406__ ART clinics

(296 static clinics and 110 outreach /mobile clinics).\r\n\r\nOut of 
            
29
the __326,440__ patients ever initiated on ART, __237,621 (73%)__ were 
            
30
retained alive on ART, __38,065 (12%)__had died, __49,747 (15%)__ were 
            
31
lost to follow-up (defaulted) and __1,392 (<1%)__ were known to have 
            
32
stopped ART. __78%__ of adults and __74%__ of children were retained 
            
33
alive on ART 12 months after ART initiation. An estimated __216,449__ 
            
34
adults and __21,172__ children (<15 years) were alive on ART by the 
            
35
end of September 2010.\r\n\r\nIn the third quarter of 2010 (July to 
            
36
September) a total of __18,579__ new patients initiated ART. 4,598 ART 
            
37
patients\r\ntransferred between clinics (20% of the total __23,241__ 
            
38
new ART clinic registrations). Among new registrations\r\n40% were 
            
39
male, 60% female; 90% were adults and 10% children.\r\n\r\nThe number

of infants starting ART in the second quarter of 2010 in WHO stage 1 
            
41
or 2 with confirmed HIV\r\ninfection (DNA-PCR) remained similar at 105 
            
42
(previous 107) , while children under 18 months starting due 
            
43
to\r\npresumed severe HIV disease increased from __138__ to 
            
44
__153__.\r\n\r\nThe delayed release of funds in 2009 has continued to 
            
45
affect the supply chain for ARVs during quarter __3, 2010__,\r\nas 
            
46
drugs continued to arrive late and in small batches, requiring several 
            
47
rounds of distribution and re-location of\r\nremaining stocks. The 
            
48
scheduled June consignment only started to arrive in October 2010. 
            
49
However, 2\r\nemergency orders, procured from \u2018cost savings\u2019 
            
50
with UNICEF arrived between June and September 2010.\r\nThese 
            
51
emergency supplies included __1,000,800__ tins of first line regimen 
            
52
(Triomune), __15,000__ Triomune starter\r\npacks, __2,000__ tins of 
            
53
Lamivudine, __2,000__ tins of Nevirapine and 700 Bioline test kits. As 
            
54
of September 2010, total  ARV stocks in country and in pipeline are 
            
55
estimated to last until mid 2011.\r\n\r\nIn June 2010, MOH management 
            
56
endorsed a change in PMTCT and ART and infant feeding policy.

The\r\nNational policy guidelines based on the new recommendations 
            
58
have been developed and approved by MOH.\r\nWork on the new guidelines
