HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B Integrated Rapid Testing and Counselling Guidelines and SOPs 1st Edition 2023

The Government of Malawi has embraced the Global AIDS, STIs, and Hepatitis B frameworks through its Health Sector Strategic Plan III (2022–2030) and the National HIV & AIDS Strategic Plan (2020–2025), aiming to deliver high-quality, efficient, and equitable healthcare services. Committed to eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, Malawi has achieved notable milestones, with 95% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) diagnosed, 97% on ART, and 94% achieving viral suppression by 2022. As a preventative measure against misdiagnoses, Malawi adopted WHO's recommendation of a three-test HIV diagnostic algorithm. Syphilis and hepatitis B testing programs are also being expanded, with a population-based survey planned to refine hepatitis B prevalence estimates. While hepatitis C testing will target high-risk groups due to cost, blood safety testing remains a priority.
